SEX/NUDITY 2 - A young woman kisses a young man for several seconds and he says, "It's like kissing someone who's drunk; it doesn't count" (because she loves someone else). A young woman kisses a panicking young man on the lips and she says, "Stay with me" (to get focused). A man and a woman kiss on the cheek and then on the lips in a close-up as they say goodbye.
A young man and a young woman embrace; that night she leaves her bedroom, enters his room and gets into his bed where he embraces her and asks if she loves him more than she loved another young man, and she replies that she does and they fall asleep.
A young man tells a young woman that he loves her, but knows she loves another young man. Two young men discuss their mutual love for a woman and one says that he may die soon and end the possibility of her choosing between them. A woman with tiger stripes and whiskers on the face says that she is no longer pretty enough to live in the government palace.
A woman wears two body-hugging military catsuits, emphasizing her thighs and buttocks. A woman wears tights and a loose blouse that reveals a little cleavage in the neckline as she gets out of her bed.

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - In an extended fight scene, gray, nude, slimy humanoid creatures without eyes or sexual characteristics attack soldiers in sewer tunnels, using their large, sharp teeth as they roar; one creature bites a man in the throat and he screams while several other creatures knock down a woman and we hear crunching below the frame; soldiers fire machine guns at creatures and kill about two dozen of them and a man digs his fingers into the head of a creature and it dents, then he breaks the neck of another creature while another man impales creatures onto a fighting staff and a long sharp metal bar several times; a woman shoots several creatures and kicks and punches several others, and one creature chokes her in close-up and throws her into a stone ledge while a male soldier fights a dozen creatures using a long, sharp staff and a knife until several creatures overwhelm a soldier and pull him into sewer water, where they begin eating him (we cannot see the eating, but hear crunching) as he screams for help and a woman fires a flaming arrow and explodes the scene into fire that fills the screen.
An aircraft flies over about 500 children lined up at the gates of a mansion and drops dozens of small parachutes with musical supply boxes attached; a close-up shows hands catching the boxes as explosions create clouds of debris and dust that fill the screen while additional explosions send tall flames and smoke across the screen for several seconds; a young woman is thrown onto her back, unconscious, with eyes open as fire consumes the front of her heavy coat and when the screen clears we see dead children and adults lying in piles in front of the gates (no blood is shown).
A man walks through a booby trapped area and is shot from off-screen (he dies with his eyes open, on his back). A man pushes another man into an oil-filled fountain and metal cables snap, stringing the drenched corpse high in the air with what looks like a broken neck. A woman is struck in the heart by an arrow and she falls with a trickle of blood beneath her body and the arrow shaft sticking out from her chest.
A crowded street scene shows families screaming loudly for several seconds as an explosion fills the screen with fire and debris as five guards fall off a collapsing balcony in the background and a tank shoots a large-caliber machine gun into the crowd and some men, women and children fall (no blood is shown); there are several more explosions and we see a large vehicle flip and burn in tall flames as people run away and more buildings crumble; a young man is dragged away by a guard and he shouts to a woman archer, "Shoot me! Shoot me!" (she does not shoot).
Armed soldiers rush a stopped train and arrest families disembarking; a shot rings out and a young woman runs forward and calls to soldiers not to shoot as a man grabs her and points a handgun to her throat; she tells him to kill her and he drops the weapon, she says that they are all killers, working against each other as pawns of the oppressive president of the country, and then asks the assembled soldiers to turn their weapons to the president and the Capitol and a man fires a machine gun into her chest and she falls and the government announces her death. A woman walks through many pallets holding warheads and stows away on a cargo plane. We hear that programmers have set up thousands of invisible booby-trap gaming pods around the Capitol; a hologram projector shows a rebel unit where the pods are located and two women argue over possession of the projector.
A woman in a street fires an arrow between two buildings and fire rushes to engulf the open space as a vehicle falls and burns in large flames. A military commander throws a rock through an open archway and gigantic machine guns on either side pop out and fire through the open space. Floodgates slide closed loudly around a courtyard and tidal waves of oil and debris fill the open space as soldiers run up stairs in a stone building to safety; the oil recedes and the soldiers re-enter the stained courtyard. Guards fire at an empty building and fire a firebomb at it, demolishing it in flames and the government propaganda TV station immediately broadcasts that all of the rebel soldiers were killed.
A fourteen-year-old girl visits a young man restrained to a hospital bed and he screams at her to kill her older sister, whom he screeches is a monster. A young man and a young woman argue about killing; he maintains that it is irrelevant who the enemy is, that no one who supports the enemy is innocent, and he does not care if they die. A woman points her bow and arrow at a man, but lowers her weapon when she sees the man is handcuffed, but is assigned to her rebel army unit. A young man is shown handcuffed in several scenes to prevent him from harming others during any episodes of violence that may be caused by brainwashing; he panics in a few scenes, but recovers. A young woman tells her commander, "He's going to try to kill me." A young man says that he murdered a man and should remain handcuffed. A young man says that the government will kill him. He asks for a suicide pill and another man says he will kill the cuffed man if necessary, so the pill is not needed.
A man says that he is not above killing children, but is not wasteful and did not instigate a massacre. We hear that a woman's younger sister died in an attack. We hear that many dead children included those of residents and government guards and that they died in a plan led by a rebellion. A government official announces that he will call a mandatory citizen evacuation to the city center and his mansion under the guise of giving food and medicine to the rebels, but will kill them over television broadcasts; he says that the nation will see the blood. A young woman says several times that she will kill a man. A young man tells a young woman that he saw her die on TV and he berates her until she tearfully leaves. A young man says that his mother beat him for giving a young woman some bread when she was starving. A woman says that a propaganda rumor was sent out that a young woman survived a bullet to the heart. A man says that innocent people die in wars (as collateral damage). A district leader says that she will not condone mass suicide by ordering a unit of soldiers to act as decoys in a battle. A young woman laments that she is responsible for the deaths of the other soldiers in her squad and a young man says to kill a man to make their deaths meaningful. Several people vote to have a symbolic Hunger Games and a young woman says, "I get to kill Snow [the president]." A woman announces in a public square that a man will be executed as a woman takes aim at him with a double-bladed arrow. A letter to a young woman states that if the writer had to expose her to the tragedies of the Hunger Games and other atrocities in order to free people again, he would choose to do so. A young woman screams at a large cat in her kitchen, throwing china cups at it and crying that her younger sister will never come back; the cups do not hit the cat and the woman hugs the animal.
After an attack, a man holds the body of his limp daughter and another man picks up a child's body and cries; many men and women storm the gates of a mansion, shouting. A young woman sits on a medical table in close-up as hands remove a cervical collar from her deeply bruised neck and throat and she attempts to speak, but cannot. A young woman lies unconscious in a medical bed as a woman places gauze over burns on her throat and hands. A woman places gauze over a deep neck wound on a young man's throat. A young man lies strapped to a hospital bed in an isolation room, his eyebrow scarred and his check bruised with a wide black chest band holding him to the table and his ankles are cuffed in restraints. We see a wounded young woman being bandaged with a wide stretch bandage around the chest and midriff, over wide bruises. A woman grabs her leg and groans in pain, but we see no blood. A man coughs several times at home and he lies asleep across his desk and his white handkerchief shows a small bloodstain. A man coughs badly and tells a young woman that another woman carried out a televised massacre of children. Two men sit in wheelchairs; one man is mute and we hear that his tongue was cut out. A young woman hunts and shoots an arrow (we do not see the prey); the camera cuts to her carrying a dead game bird by the neck, but we see no blood.
We see damaged buildings in districts with windows that have been broken out and parts of stone and brick buildings that have fallen in previous bombings. A few scenes include muffled sounds of bombs exploding off-screen. We hear planes shooting large machine guns in the background and out a window, we see guards firing rifles with flashes of fire at the muzzles (we do not see casualties). Soldiers travel through subway and sewer tunnels shoulder-high and knee-high in water, with steam spraying them (no one is injured); they crawl through a tight opening into another corridor where they hear sounds in a tunnel and some sort of creature charges a woman knocking her down. Five soldiers run across a train station floor that crumbles behind them and they find a woman living behind a wall in a secret home and they hide in her basement bedroom.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
