"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Sully | 2016 | PG-13 | - 1.4.5

The story of the fateful US Airways flight out of La Guardia airport that Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) managed to land safely on the Hudson River on January 15, 2009 despite the fact that both engines were disabled by a flock of geese. Also with Aaron Eckhart, Valerie Mahaffey, Delphi Harrington, Mike O'Malley, Jamey Sheridan, Anna Gunn, Holt McCallany, Ahmed Lucan and Laura Linney. Directed by Clint Eastwood. [1:35]

SEX/NUDITY 1 - A woman kisses a man on the cheek and says, "That's from my mom and she's single" (the man declines the invitation and says that he is married). A woman hugs a man and two other men act startled. A woman behaves flirtatiously when a man makes a suggestive comment.

VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A nightmare scene shows an airplane losing both engines and turning back toward an airport: the plane speeds through a city of skyscrapers as passengers scream and it crashes into one building, exploding into a fireball (the man having the nightmare wakes in a start). A man imagines an airplane soaring through a city of skyscrapers and crashing into a building.
We see a large flock of birds flying toward a plane mid-air and hear loud thumps as they strike the plane and its engines; the engines are shown glowing and then stopping as the plane loses power and the passengers seem uneasy as we see the pilot and co-pilot devising a strategy for an emergency landing (we see this scene replayed a few times in varying detail) and we see "low altitude" light up on the control panel and the passengers are told to "brace for impact." An Air Force jet experiences a malfunction mid-air and the pilot maneuvers to get back to the landing strip without incident. A tour helicopter flies over a river as a passenger jet makes an emergency landing on the river.
A passenger jet makes an emergency landing on a river and we see passengers bracing for impact and then being jolted when they hit the water; the plane begins to submerge and water rushes into the cabin as flight attendants deploy the exit slides and people jump out of the plane; one passenger jumps into the frigid water and tries to swim away but doesn't get far and returns to the crash site, another passenger panics when she sees gas in the water and jumps trying to get away (she is rescued by a diver) while others line the wings of the jet waiting for rescue and we see a flight attendant with a bloody gash on her leg and blood seeps into the water around her leg. After an emergency landing on a river, a plane is shown partially submerged in a few scenes. We see photographs of the actual events of the water landing and the partially submerged plane with passengers lining the wings and waiting for rescue.
An air traffic controller communicates with a passenger jet pilot after a mayday call and he cries when he loses contact and assumes the plane has crashed. A man who's jogging steps into a road in front of a taxi and the vehicle screeches to a stop as the driver yells at the man. Many members of the press surround a home and a hotel trying to get information from a pilot and his family after an emergency landing. Computer simulations show two planes crashing; one into the runway and one into buildings surrounding the airport.
A panel of NTSB investigators questions a pilot and co-pilot after an emergency landing on a river. We hear a report of "non-critical injuries" after a plane makes an emergency landing on a river. A man has a dream about being questioned about whether he is a hero or a fraud. A cab driver makes reference to the US being involved in "two wars without end." Two men talk about having nightmares after an emergency landing. A man says, "People don't survive water landings."

LANGUAGE 5 - At least 1 F-word, a reference to an obscene hand gesture, 6 scatological terms, 3 anatomical terms, 8 mild obscenities, name-calling (lucky bastard), 4 religious exclamations (God, Oh My God, Holy Christ, Please God).

SUBSTANCE USE - Several people in a bar drink alcohol and beer, a barman tells a man that they have concocted a drink in his honor as he pours glasses of Vodka with a "splash of water," and two men are asked when they had their last drink and if they take drugs during an interview by NTSB investigators.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Air travel, computer simulations, split second decisions, heroism, NTSB.

MESSAGE - Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger is a hero.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
