Immaculate SEX/NUDITY 5

 – A woman bathes another woman and we see her fully nude from the side with her arms held over her breasts and pubic area (cleavage, bare abdomen, bare legs and the side of her bare buttock are shown). Young women bathe wearing long dresses that when wet show their breasts and nipples through the fabric. A young woman lies in a tub of water wearing a long dress that reveals her breasts, nipples and the outline of her pubic area through the fabric.
A young woman wears a bra and underwear that reveal cleavage, her bare abdomen and back and her legs to the hips. A young woman’s bare abdomen is seen briefly, when she gets dressed. A young woman sits on a toilet with her skirt partially raised (part of her lower leg is seen). A young woman wears a low-cut nightgown that reveals cleavage and the outline of her breasts and nipples in several scenes.
A young woman kisses a man’s ring after a religious ceremony.
A young woman remarks about another young woman’s vibrator running out of batteries. While being processed by airport security an officer says that it is a waste for an attractive young woman to be taking her vows (he speaks in Italian and the young woman cannot understand him). A young woman is questioned by a religious authority about whether she has been chaste and whether she has ever had “congress”; a doctor states that he examined her and that her hymen is intact but we understand that the young woman is pregnant when we see a fetus on a sonogram screen and hear a heartbeat.

Immaculate VIOLENCE/GORE 8

 – A young woman hits a woman in the back of the head with a large metal cross (we see blood on her head), then hits her in the face (we see bloody cuts) and then in the eye and face repeatedly, leaving her face unrecognizable and bloody. A young woman falls from a roof to her death and we see her legs covered with blood and her face smashed and bloody. A young woman sneaks into a woman’s room and takes keys from a drawer before running to a gate, struggling to unlock it, and squeezing through but being pulled back by several people following her; the young woman’s leg is pulled between the bars of the gate and broken (we hear a snap and see blood and her leg bends with the break) as she screams. A young woman chokes a man to death with a string of rosary beads and we see blood oozing from his neck and throat before hearing a crack. A young woman walks out of catacombs toward a passage that leads outside; she is pulled back by the legs by a man that tears open her dress and uses a scalpel to cut around her pregnant abdomen as she screams and we see blood; she uses a sharp implement to stab the man in the neck and blood sprays on her face and chest as he collapses and dies.
A young woman with blood covering her face screams in close up for an extended period of time while in labor and delivering a child; we hear a flush of fluid and a thud on the ground, the young woman uses her teeth to cut the umbilical cord, we hear labored breathing from off-screen and the young woman raises a heavy stone over the newborn and brings it down crushing it (we hear a squish); we see the newborn just after birth, before being crushed, from a distance as it wriggles slightly and appears to be blood-soaked.
A young woman yells and complains about what is happening and she is pulled away by two men; we later see her strapped into a chair with her tongue held in a metal device as a man cuts off her tongue (we see the tongue and blood pours from her mouth as she screams). A young woman pours ethanol around a lab and prepares to light it when she is attacked by a man, she gets away and locks the man in the room, he pulls her hair and slams her head against the door, she breaks his finger (we hear a crack) and she ignites the liquid (we hear the man screaming behind the door) and other flammable liquid explodes as the man breaks the door down (we see him with a badly burned head and face). A young woman lies in a tub of water and another young woman holds her underwater trying to drown her, they struggle and the first young woman is held underwater again until the attacker is pulled away by other young women (we see her later with scratches on her neck).
A young woman runs through catacombs wincing in labor pain and she finds a dead young woman with her tongue cut out and her eyes and flesh discolored. A young woman screams and calls for help while in bed covered with blood (she says that something is wrong with her pregnancy); people attend to her and put her in a car to take her to a hospital, she gets out of the car when it stops and runs but is caught by two men that take her back to a convent where she is branded on the bottom of her feet (we see the brand and the flesh burning and later see her with bloody bandages) to keep her from running away.
A young woman wakes up in a wooden coffin as dirt is piled on it from the outside; she screams and pleads for help (we understand that she is left to die there). A young woman wakes up with a start when a woman holding a pair of scissors rises up next to her bed and lunges toward her, cutting off a lock of her hair. A young woman describes falling through ice and drowning when she was a child and that her heart stopped for several minutes before she was revived (we see a young girl pounding on the underside of ice and screaming briefly).
A young woman has a nightmare that she is pulled through a wall by several pairs of hands when she is seated in a confessional; the hands paw at her face while someone else with a red cloth over their face raises a stake over her and she wakes up screaming. A woman hands a stake to a young woman and says that it is one from the hand of Christ when he was crucified. A woman is shown to have burn scars (brands) in the shape of crosses on the bottoms of her feet. A young woman follows the sound of a quavering voice into a chapel where a woman lies on the floor uttering a prayer and when she turns her head, we see her face covered with a red cloth. A woman grabs a young woman from behind and covers her mouth; she tells her, “You will never leave here.”
A young woman describes a boy having hit her and that she hit him back before coming to the convent. A young woman is rude and dismissive to another young woman when they first meet and purposely mistranslates things other people are saying to her. A young woman describes a convent as a refuge for older sisters that are suffering at the end of their lives; she describes one woman with a tumor that metastasized. A young woman says to be careful of a woman, saying, “She bites.” A woman tells a young woman, “Suffering is love.”
A young woman vomits in a couple of scenes and we see the goo; she vomits into a toilet in one scene and we see a blood-covered tooth among the goo. A young woman pulls a fingernail off her finger and we see blood and goo as it squishes. A young woman complains about having “puked out a tooth.” A woman prays and collects a blood-soaked sheet into her arms and presses it to her face (we see her face covered with blood) and she finds a chicken with its head cut off wrapped in another sheet and soaked in blood. We see a lab with many jars with fetuses of various stages and conditions floating in liquid. A young woman’s very pregnant abdomen is shown with movement under the flesh. A young woman’s water breaks and we see a puddle of fluid on the floor.
A woman instructs young women to sharpen their knives for use to kill a chicken, then raises a heavy blade over a live bird on a block (we see blood and the bird’s head separated from its body); a young woman attempts to kill a chicken but cannot do it. A bird slams into a window and we see blood on the glass and the bird as it twitches on the ground with its neck broken. A young woman tends to a patient in a bed, cleaning her and tells other young women watching to alert the doctor of the consistency of a patient’s feces changes (we do not see waste).

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
